about

TL;DR

After a long time where inspiration came in different forms that I’d never experienced, let alone tried to translate to artwork of any sort...

ACWB created a beautiful initiative. Connecting local seniors with artists who were to create something inspired by the interaction.

Meghan and I were inspired creatively on many levels, but we also felt excited to do what we love in a way that could directly impact our beloved community in a positive way.

Through developing this multi-media piece (which we agreed would be a simple, stress-free, fun outlet for “just us” while rebuilding after the flood... hilarious) we thought of our wonderful loved ones, and how much they could add.

My first call was to Glen. MY drummer. When I write music I’m subconsciously aware of him... mostly fucking with the time signatures and making fun of me. He made this possible on many levels, as always. He’s the hero. He’s the boss... whether it’s in the studio, or rebuilding our basement uninvited and tirelessly.

Chris added a bass section that I could never have imagined, and effortlessly created my favourite part of the song. He’s had to endure me playing bass on occasion and probably just did this out of respect for music itself.

Brandon sent me 78 wav files, but in the end his contribution on keys was the final touch and his help with the recording process was crucial and so very appreciated.

Meghan, my love, steals the show and my heart as she has since the first moment I laid eyes on her. Her warmth and empathy give the piece its gravitational center. She finds herself in the subject as gracefully as she finds the confidence to lead the way home with her beautiful voice. Her interrogation skills are somewhat questionable, as she plagiarized Buddy the Elf and asked Krystina “what’s your favourite colour?” Krystina responded without hesitation and said purple and gold... “royal colours”.

Best days passed you
Sunsets, last few
Curtains drawn turn
Royal light blue

Krystina is the muse. She overcame the obstacle of conversing with two socially awkward artist/strangers (mid-pandemic) and opened some of her heart to us. So few of us would be able to express such a beautiful soul in such a short and restricted interaction, but we’re eternally grateful that she could.

Thank you so very much to Luay, and the ACWB for honouring us with the opportunity to contribute to our community in a way that means the world to us. Thank you so much to Glen, Chris, Brandon and Meghan for helping shape this vision and create this song. I’ve never been more proud of anything I’ve ever created, and I love you all more than words can say.

This is Oft Forgotten.

lyrics

“Not Important” on your forehead
“Worthless, lost and Oft Forgotten”
Words you tattoo on your back to
Read when you look at your rear view

Words you repeat in your deep sleep
Keep you deceived and you believe
You’re not loved and you’re alone
You feel unwelcome when you’re home

Tired eyes and suffocating, under the weather
Just need more sunshine and I’ll be fine
I’m just boring and forgotten
Nothing wild, nothing normal
We are not alone, they are coming
They are here, I know it to be true
Liberation, freedom for you all
For me, I am perfect, I am sane
I am brilliant, not in vain
Wild emptiness inside my head
That’s what the doctors said and
Light are flashing in the background
Waves are crashing on the pavement
I am not alone, I am coming home

All your meds and words unsaid
Regrets and dead ends in your head

You’ve been lost but now you’re found
Don’t let voices push you around
You’re not alone, shake off the rust
Don’t wait for them... come and find us

All your meds and words unsaid
Regrets and dead ends in your head
Best days passed you, sunsets last few
Curtains drawn turn royal light blue
